We’ve Arrived but Haven’t Yet Landed: Passaddhi Vihara in the Pacific Northwest

Published: April 26, 2024

The Amtrak brought us, Ayya Suvijjānā and Ayya Niyyānika, from San Jose, CA to Seattle WA, a twenty-four hour journey that ended at King Street Station Wednesday night.

With the help of local supporters there is now much to do in order to start up Passaddhi Vihara as the newest monastic community in Western Washington State.

Discussions have been brewing for a while, culminating in a big three week effort of planning and alignment building hosted by Karuna Buddhist Vihara (KBV) in California.

During our stay we got to share Dhamma and practice with the KBV community online and in person.

It was wonderful to end our time together with a Patimokkha recitation (the bhikkhunī rules of training) and sima making (the boundaries for a monastery and ceremony space within the monastery)

After the excellent bhikkhunī community time, we slowed down to the pace of Amtrak and enjoyed the scenic ride.

We were joyfully met in Seattle and are currently hosted on Capitol Hill until May 1st, where we continue the planning and occasional walks in the rain.

There is so much Dhamma delight and offers of support. Passaddhi Vihara seems off to a good start, but all the ducks aren’t in a row yet.

In the next few weeks are happy to have some opportunities to share Dhamma and to meet with practitioners. We hope to see some of you there or at other time one-on-one or in a small group while we attend to the errands and activities of starting up a monastic dwelling.
