Vassa: What is it generally, and at Passaddhi Vihara in 2024
The Buddha told the monastic Saṅgha to stay in one place during the three months considered the rainy season (Vassa) in India. This year it is July 21st – October 17th. Traditionally many monastics have dedicated those months to deepening in meditation and study.
In the early Saṅgha, often a single supporter, group, or the supporters in a village would invite monastics to take residence near them and pledge to provide needed requisites during the Vassa.
This Vassa, the Passaddhi Vihara bhikkhunīs are not supported by a single supporter or group. There are many people providing a variety of support, such as funds for the rent, meals, help with errands, and useful things for the monastery. A few lay people will ceremonially offer invitation to reside in Olympia for the Vassa. They hope many of you reading this webpage will join them in support throughout the course of the Vassa.
Ayyā Suvijjānā and Ayya Niyyānika, the resident monastics of Passaddhi Vihara intend to each have three weeks of secluded retreat during the Vassa and also to deepen in practice through study and teaching.
For the Tuesday morning Sutta Study, 1st and 3rd Thursday Dhamma Meditation, and 1st Wednesday at the Thai Temple programs see the teaching schedule here.
