Vision for The Next Phase of Passaddhi Vihara
Vision for the Future
Our vision for the gradual growth of Passaddhi Vihara—and the timing of its next stage of development—is now under thoughtful consideration. The two‑bedroom apartment that Ayya Suvijjānā and Ayya Niyyānika currently inhabit has served them well, yet it is becoming clear that a larger and more suitable space will soon be needed. For the monastic community to grow and for deeper community engagement to flourish, we will eventually require a residence with more room and a dedicated place for programs and meditation.
Initially, we anticipated renting a house with additional bedrooms and a separate area for meditation and Dhamma teachings. However, after receiving guidance from experienced supporters, we are exploring whether purchasing a property—one that can be adapted to the needs of a monastic community, including a meditation hall—may be a wiser next step. The growth would remain steady and gradual.
One possibility is to repurpose a three‑bedroom (or larger) home with a garage, detached shop, or studio that could be converted into a meditation hall. Ideally, the property would be at least one‑third of an acre, allowing space for small, movable kutis that could be placed on the land for periods of seclusion.
Looking ahead, a later phase—likely over the next decade—would involve transitioning to a larger property of several acres as the community expands. The kutis could be moved to the new location when that time comes.
Given current market conditions, and the relative cost of renting versus purchasing, the Passaddhi Vihara Support Foundation is open to acquiring a modest property with two or three structures, provided there is sufficient community support for this vision.
A central aim is to create a place where laypeople can come to practice during scheduled hours and join the monastics for programs. With a detached meditation hall and clearly defined public and private areas, the property could serve as a sanctuary for quiet, reflection, and meditation—a resource for the broader community as well as a stable home for the monastics.
