We visited a property that attracted our attention and could meet the criteria for development. It shows feasibility for this vision.

Vision for Next Phase of Passaddhi Vihara

Our vision for gradual growth and the timing for the expansion of Passaddhi Vihara is up for consideration.  The need for something larger than the two-bedroom, open floorplan, apartment that Ayya Suvijjānā and Ayya Niyyānika currently inhabit seems to be on the horizon. In order for the monastic community to grow in size and for more direct community involvement, we need a larger residence and a place for people to gather for programs and meditation.

Originally we had thought that the next step would be to rent a house with more bedrooms and a suitable and separate space for meditation and Dhamma teachings.  After receiving advice from knowledgeable supporters, a purchased property that can be tailored to the needs of a monastic community including a meditation hall might be a better next step.  The growth would still be gradual.

????????Our thoughts are to repurpose a three bedroom or larger house with a garage or detached shop or studio that could be converted into a meditation hall.  We hope for ⅓ acre or larger property.  Small and movable kutis could be built or placed on the property for seclusion. ????????

The next phase after that would be an even larger property of at least several acres. This would happen as the community grows over the next decade.  The kutis could be moved to the next location.

Given the current purchase prices versus rent costs, the Passaddhi Vihara Support Foundation has agreed to consider purchasing a moderate sized property with two or three structures on it, if there is enough support for this vision.

One aim is to have spaces where lay people can come and practice during scheduled hours and join with the monastics for programs.  It could be a sanctuary for local people to come to during open times during the day for quiet and meditation, especially if there is a detached meditation hall and well separated public garden and private spaces for monastics.

Ideas

  • Increase the number of monastics at Passaddhi Vihara.
    • A place with more bedrooms and space for kutis
  • Support monastics to have time for private meditation and study.
    • Kutis (small retreat cabins) could be added as spaces for monastic seclusion.
  • Have space for lay people to come and practice.
    • Separate structure to serve as the mediation hall.

More ideas and possible solutions welcome!

This property with a shop, that could become a meditation hall, attracted our attention

Example: ½ acre property with house, garage, and shop on one half and space for kutis on the other half of the property.

EXAMPLE: The workshop in the back could be converted into a meditation hall.  The detached garage could be a library and study.  To the right of the meditation hall and past the row of trees, kutis could be built and would allow for seclusion.
